What is an Australian Cobber Dog?

The Australian Cobberdog is a special breed that has been developed over many years through the hard work and dedication of Beverley from Rutland Manor and Mel from Tegans. The breed was given the name ‘Cobber’ which is an Australian slang for friend or mate, reflecting its ideal temperament as a therapy/companion dog.

The Australian Cobberdog is a unique breed that emerged from the combination of several dog breeds in its early development stages. This breed took the best traits of the Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel while maintaining a focus on temperament and suitability as a therapy dog. While its genetic makeup has evolved over many generations, the Australian Cobberdog no longer strongly resembles any of its ancestor breeds. It has now established its own distinct identity, characterised by traits that make it particularly suitable for therapy and service roles. These traits include the ability to maintain sustained eye contact, emotional warmth, high intuition in reading human emotional states, intelligence, a high aptitude for training, and a calm, caring nature.

The Australian Cobberdog has a low to no shedding coat with very little odor. Regular grooming and clipping is necessary to keep the long coat knot-free and tidy.

The Australian Cobberdog is a registered “Pure Breed in Development” with the Master Dog Breeders & Associates (MDBA). This means that only pure-bred dogs are registered by the MDBA, and they officially recognized Cobberdogs as a pure breed in development in January 2012. The MDBA is the only registry body in the world authorized to register Australian Cobberdogs.

When you purchase a Cobberdog puppy, it is essential to ensure that it is a genuine Cobberdog. This can be confirmed by checking the puppy’s registration and breeding documents. Genuine Cobberdog litter siblings will all have similar features and characteristics, and their mother and father must be registered with the MDBA.

To ensure that you are getting an authentic Australian Cobberdog, it is important to ask the breeder for proof of registration and breeding. You should ask to see the MDBA breeder membership and MDBA registration certificates of both breeding parents. Only breeders who are registered with the MDBA can breed true Australian Cobberdogs. This breed is still relatively rare.

As with any breed, early socialisation, proper training, and regular exercise are essential for a well-rounded and happy Cobberdog – all aspects that we specialise in at Belamekah.
